How to Choose The Right Domain Name For Your Website
Domain name is the starting point for your website. Domain name is your web address that people can use to access your website. The domain name of your website should define the type of business/service you are offering. Your domain name should be easy to remember and ideally it should contain one/two words. As most of the domain names are already taken so you may want to create a combination of two or three words/numbers.
For e.g. you have a website that provides free resources related to the legal industry. Your combinations would be ‘legal’ ‘info’ as your site contains informative content related to the legal industry. So in this scenario your domain name would be www.legalinfo.com or you can go for a .info extension.
You can also have your targeted keywords in the domain name which helps alot in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). So, say you are selling custom jewelry on your website. You can go for mycustomjewelryshop.com
This helps search engines to send you relevant traffic based on your domain and website keywords.
Top Level Domains
Domains are organized in different levels. Top level domains are the most commonly used domains like .com, .org, .edu, .gov, .net and more.
Regional or country specific domains are used where you have different versions of the website for different countries. For e.g. if the market for your website is the United States you may want to get a .us domain and for United Kingdom you may want to get a .co.uk domain. Regional domains builds trust amongst your readers as visitors in the US would treat your website as a local website if it has a .us domain name.
Check Availability and Register your Domain
You can check the availability of your desired domain name and register it with a domain registrar. You would find a lot of hosting companies that you can register the domain name with but I would recommend registering your domain directly with the Domain Registrar like GoDaddy or NameCheap.
You must be wondering how easy it is to transfer your domain from one registrar to another. If you have the domain registered with GoDaddy and you want to transfer it to someone else who is with a different company you need to request an EPP authorization code from your account to release your domain. This process takes a few weeks depending on your domain registrar. A faster way to transfer a domain is to ask the other party to register an account with the same registrar. This eliminates the need to request your registrar to release the domain and it can be transferred to another account within a few days.
If you have web hosting with a different company there is no need to transfer your domain on to the other host. You can simply change the DNS settings and point the domain’s Name Servers (NS) to your web hosting. After you modify the name servers it will take up to 48 hours to propagate and point your domain to your hosting account with another company.
